Six hours of freezing rain last night and some snow forecast for tomorrow, the arboretum Christmas trees go on sale tomorrow, we have ordered a couple of cords of firewood and the Christmas cake has been made. The winter birding season is about to start it would seem … Chris, the naturalist at the arbo and I are having a friendly contest this year to see who can see the longest bird species list in the arbo during the season which runs from december to the end of February … that should be fun.

Meanwhile, I thought I’d sing the praises of a terrific new birders “app” for the iPhone that not only allows you to record your sightings with just a tap of the finger but also notes the GPS coordinates and at the end of the day will present you with a map of where you saw each bird. Very cool.
