In the past week or so there has been an interesting and at times amusing exchange of thoughts on the local birders chat group concerning the problems of squirrels and bird feeders.

Various solutions have been propounded, some going so far as to offer recipes for cooking them after judicious “termination with extreme prejudice”, and one correspondent offered the information that as they do not like safflower seed then offering those to the birds would solve the problem as the squirrels would go elsewhere – apparently they find the taste of the seeds somewhat bitter.

Well, that may work in most situations – but not in this garden :
