A Family of Deer

Yesterday we were invited to join a small supporters outing and information session hosted by the Nature Conservancy Canada at the wonderful Kenauk Wildlife Reserve  between Montreal and Ottawa. This is our favourite place on earth bar none so naturally we jumped at the chance.  Apart from simply "being there" once again being enough [...]

Secret Gateway

Gateway with Clematis While walking around the town we happened upon this side entry to beautifully cool and shady side garden on a house we have walked past many times before without paying attention. The dynamic range of the scene was quite high with very deep shadows but by virtue of a small degree [...]

Iris, Crocuses and a Rabbit (video)

Iris reticulata Emphatically not a native flower -actually it is native to Russia, the Caucasus, and northern Iran, but cultivated widely in temperate regions. Earns its keep here as one of the first flowers to emerge when the snows leave. Very hard to photograph - in reality it is really a deep purple but auto [...]

2017 – A Year in the Wildlife Garden

A Good Year Thus we come to the end of another year of wildlife gardening in our small suburban "nature reserve". We have enjoyed telling you, week by week, what we have done and seen and enjoyed and we know from comments received that many readers of the journal have found something to interest [...]

High Water (still)

Back in May there were bad floods around the island - waters are still high over six months later due to summer long attempts to lower levels back in the Great Lakes, in fact they have been rising again in the past week or two. Sony RX10m3 camera lens 80mm ISO 100 1/500s [...]

Passing Warblers and Big Bees

The week started with NO Japanese beetles being found and fingers crossed that their season had finally come to an end … it also started with a Bay-breasted Warbler in one of the Rowan trees. Good auguries for the week to come. Monday produced Warbling Vireo, Magnolia and Black-throated Green Warblers and … a [...]

Falling into a Warbling Week

As the weather cools down (thank goodness) the first tints of autumn are beginning to appear and many leaves are starting to look tired. We have a large bank of mixed dogwoods on the southern edge of the garden and it is full of juvenile Song Sparrows, Purple Finches, House Finches all searching for [...]

Summer is upon us

It's always amazing to us how summer suddenly arrives in Quebec after a fairly short and concentrated spring. Certainly it is here today and we have been labouring outside trying to get a head start on things. Dandelion flowers needed strimming off before they can set seed (how I love doing that - nasty little [...]

First daffodil of the year

With only one week to go before May-Day, the first daffodil of the spring finally opened in the garden today. A clump of sanguinaria is also in flower, but by the time they were observed they were in shadow so their portraits will be taken another day.
