A Grand Day Out

The sun shone today and we decided to have a cultural day downtown and visit the Montreal Musée des Beaux Arts (https://www.mbam.qc.ca/en/)to see the wonderful exhibition currently showing there under the title of "Marvels and Mirages of Orientalism: From Spain to Morocco, Benjamin-Constant in His Time" ... and well worth the effort it was too. Click here [...]

Garden birds – why gardens need a pond

Had a busy twenty minutes today in the garden this morning with birds flapping all over the place including Yellow-rumped Warblers (about twenty) and a nice Blackburnian amongst the regulars. Almost every bird was there because of the presence of the pond and waterfall - worth all the effort of installing because they certainly attract [...]

Trilliums and Owls

This is a bizarre week - outdoors the sunshine and the temperatures are more like late June than the first week of May and we are already watering less than drought tolerant plants in the garden.  Right on time though, the Devil's spawn dandelions are springing up all over the lawn and claiming hours [...]

NOT a Great Gray Owl

All week there have been reports of a very cooperative Great Gray Owl in the arboretum while I was stuck behind my microscope at work.  Naturally this was frustrating, especially so as it seems to have stayed pretty much in the same place all the time and plenty of people have seen it.  We didn't [...]

Montreal truths

A friend just posted this on FB and I wanted to keep a copy, so ...   YOU KNOW YOU ARE FROM MONTREAL WHEN : • You pronounce it "Muntreal", not "Mahntreal". • You have ever said anything like "I have to stop at the guichet before we get to the dep." • Your only [...]

Decent snow at last

Well, decent in terms of quantity but a bit too wet for my liking.  After a very low (for Montreal) snowfall winter the weather gods decided to play rough last night and chucked it at us for 18 hours solid.  Even stopped us going out to the theatre - the one day of the winter [...]

Finally good weather

At long last we have a dump, albeit we had to put up with a period of freezing rain in the middle of it.  Brought out the idiots on the roads, of course, but made everything look very pretty which is good and welcome indeed. And it's Friday night so we have a whole weekend [...]

A day with Snow Buntings is never wasted

We spent all of today out west of Montreal taking part in the Hudson Christmas Bird Count ... CBCs are annual censuses of birds that have been taking place for about the past 90 years and are seriously "good things".  Our route eventually takes us down to the very flat, cold and windy lands around [...]

Sunrise on the St-Lawrence River

Having decided to re-awaken the journal, I need material to post.  It strikes me, you readers being keen on photographs, to try to do at least a weekly photo (and maybe even daily ones if possible). Driving along the lakeshore every morning to work with no camera and other cars pressing behind me I am [...]

Redpolls (at last)

This morning we received an email from a British birder stranded in Montreal for the weekend and who had found our website (www.sparroworks.ca) and was seeking help with ideas for places to go birding ... well, it's very cold right now, down near the minus twenties and heaven only knows what with the windchill.  Anyway, I sent him some suggestions and [...]
