In another life, in a universe far far away (England) I was for more than twenty years a fanatical exponent of the Morris Dance and its music. I had to give all this up when I came to Canada – there’s something in the oath of allegiance you sign when becoming a citizen about abjuring the morris and all its works – but I am unrepentant. Unrepentant but somewhat embarrassed, not about the dance which is wonderful but about some of the people who take part … I hasten to add that none of the people I knew and whom I count as friends were embarrassing but they will recognise the twerps who were.
Anyway, purely by chance and as a consequence of reading the Guardian on-line at lunchtime today and getting fascinated by a discussion therein concerning the perils of young ladies riding cycles while wearing skirts (where else but in the Guardian could you read this stuff?) I was led down a sideroad, as one is on the internet, and happened upon this and just in case none of you have seen it I thought you’d enjoy having a watch of this really funny little film …Derek Jacobi too, who’d have thought it of him !
At least watch the trailer – it is truly glorious. How i envy the people who put this together, must have been a blast as the young people say (well, they said it last week, I’m sure).
Well, having revealed all I might as well treat you to some archive pictures … Most of my career I was with Fenstanton Morris (Huntingdonshire) but for a couple of years I was with the Duck Race Morris (Cambridgeshire) and I was always heavily influenced by the infamous Mirkmere Morris (Huntingdonshire fenland) … the following picture is the Mirkmere Morris photographed in front of the parish church of St Fenella the Fastidious … this being a morris team it’s no use telling you that I’m the one with the beard as that’s part of the costume – no, I’m the handsome one with the beard … OK, second from the left and it WAS a long time ago.
