A Week in Pictures (23 Dec 2018)

Cooper’s Hawk

The LBJs and Woodpeckers and their chums scattered as the local pest control manager popped by at lunchtime to see what might be on the menu.

Icebow (22deg halo)

On very cold days with ice crystals min the sky you can see “icebows” around the sun … here we have an icebow and it’s reflected mirror image. Just FYI, the bright spot to the left of the sun along the central axis is a “sun dog” and there should be his twin out to the right only it was hidden

** This smaller photo is a very impressive and complete icebow/halo at Annapurna base camp in the Nepalese Himalayas …

Common Redpoll

Working hard on a very cold and windy Christmas Bird Count day (Saturday 22 December) on the flat lands south of St-Clet where there is no shelter … and very few birds this day … we were visited by a wheeling flock of some 30 or so Common Redpolls of which this is but one. They settled almost at our feet to feed on seeds topping dried plants in a roadside ditch. Magical little things. There are more photographs in the corresponding journal entry for this week.
