A three hour drive south from Monterey to San Luis Obispo and another ten miles to our hotel (really good) in California’s answer to a “seaside resort” started in cool and foggy conditions before turning very hot and bright s we drove down the central valley and back to cold mist by the shore before everything cleared mid-afternoon and the heat and blue skies returned … all most confusing.
Anyway we broke our journey at a highway rest-stop (always good for birds) where we added Oak Titmouse and Yellow-billed Magpie to the trip list and then an hour or two spent in the state park at Morro Bay for the Oregon subspecies of the Dark-Eyed Junco, Black Phoebe, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks and White Pelicans and then in the grounds of our hotel a Sage Sparrow.
Tomorrow we plan to visit another state park with possibilities about 30 minutes north of here.
Dining options in Pismo are limited so we decided to slum it and pig-out at the local oak-BBQ emporium with plates full of ribs washed down with beer. Very sticky and very good but it needs to be at least a month of salads and brown rice penance before we feel our consciences will have been satisfied … fine dining it was not !!
