WE never managed to get to visit the park on Ile Bizard this spring and so missed all the “good” birds that were reported from there so decided to take a walk there this non-labouring Labour Day holiday. This is a really wonderful park run by the Montreal city authorities with extensive marsh and forest habitats [...] The Great-crested Flycatcher gang were back in the garden yesterday making a racket and zipping around. There are three of them this week 9there have been four) and they concentrated on the fruit-heavy Pagoda Dogwood tree and later moved to the trees over the pond where they were clearly taking insects … the rest of the [...] Steaming heat again and we decided to go somewhere different this weekend – not far, just along the Parc nature de Cap St-Jacques where we wandered the wooded edges of the river and caught some breezes (and hatched a plot to buy a couple of kayaks – but we’ll save that for another day). Plenty of bird [...] We haven’t posted much lately because of the work we have been having done about the house, of which more later. However, today is a bit more relaxing so here are some update images of recent activities in the vicinity… First of all. There are some glorious Dahlias just coming into flower:

Common Loon at Kenauk
Short intro … This journal has often referred to Kenauk and we keep being asked about it. Kenauk is the largest private wildlife reserve in Canada and only an hour from home, half way between Montreal and Ottawa … which makes it very [...] Labour Day weekend stuff … Glorious, glorious weather ought to have us out exploring the hinterland and seeking bears and rare birds but instead we have (I’m 61 in a week – good excuse) chosen to spend the day quietly baking bread, gardening and preserving tomatoes from the market. It truly is too nice to be doing [...] A couple of seasonal images from the today’s beaitng of the garden bounds. The lepidopteran is, we think, one of the Noctuid moths but that’s as far as we can get and even then it’s dubious. We found him on the wall of the house, not tangled in a spider web but sitting behind it and unable [...] For one reason or another today was out first visit to one of the best wildlife watching sites around Montreal – the Parc nature d l’Ile Bizard but today we made it. There has been an inordinate amount of rain this summer so far and we have never seen the levels of water in the marsh are [...] Towards the northern end of the Arboretum is a modest-sized field that has suffered quite a few indignities in recent years but was left a few years ago in the hope that Bobolinks might return to it (they used to nest there). Well, they have indeed prospected the field in the spring but on the whole [...] |
